YWCA

The YWCA of Lubbock partnered with MWM Architects to transform a vacant 173,375 SF K-Mart building into a vibrant, multi-functional community hub. Located at University Avenue and 66th Street, this ambitious adaptive reuse project brought together a wide array of services under one roofβ€”each with unique spatial, adjacency, and programming needs. The design reimagines the former retail space into a welcoming, accessible, and resource-rich facility serving Lubbock families across multiple generations.

About This Project

The facility now houses a wide range of community programs and services, including early childhood and preschool classrooms, afterschool and summer camp programs, specialty classrooms, a demonstration kitchen, a full cafeteria, and indoor play areas. Additional spaces include fitness and wellness areas, executive and administrative offices, a multipurpose event room, and a comprehensive clinic/pharmacy suite. The design also supports critical initiatives like the Food 2 Kids Program, a social services suite, and a kids boutique/closet exchangeβ€”all tailored to empower families in need.

The success and innovation of the new YWCA facility has garnered national attention. It was designated as an EnVision Center by U.S. HUD Secretary Ben Carson and later received significant philanthropic support from MacKenzie Scott. Today, the YWCA of Lubbock stands as a model for adaptive reuse and community impact.
