Tornado Memorial
In response to the City of Lubbockβs request to honor the memory of the 26 lives lost in the devastating May 11, 1970 tornadoes, MWM Architects, Inc. designed a memorial that commemorates both the lives lost and the resilience of the community in rebuilding. The design incorporates elements that reflect both the tragedy and the strength of Lubbockβs recovery.
About This Project
At the heart of the memorial are two 19-foot-tall, black granite walls, set within a plaza that mirrors the street layout of Lubbock in 1970. These walls serve as a tribute to the paths of the two tornadoes, guiding visitors through the neighborhoods affected by the storms. Engraved on the interior surfaces of the granite walls is a narrative that details the impact of the tornadoes on Lubbock, offering a meaningful connection to the cityβs history. To further enhance the reflective atmosphere, a fountain is situated at the north end of the walls, designed to mask the noise of nearby Avenue Q traffic and create a peaceful environment for those visiting the memorial.
In 2023, the City of Lubbock Tornado Memorial received the American Architecture Award, further solidifying its place as a significant cultural and historical landmark.
