MWM Architects led the architectural design for Funky Door, a one-of-a-kind wine bar in Lubbock, Texas, that masterfully blends exceptional food, wine, craft cocktails, and live music into a vibrant and memorable destination. The Owner sought a design that would capture the unique, eclectic spirit of Funky Door creating a space that feels both inviting and dynamic, while offering a distinct experience that sets it apart from traditional dining venues.

About This Project

The design thoughtfully incorporates a variety of seating environments throughout the 8,900-square-foot restaurant, each carefully crafted to provide guests with different dining and viewing experiences. Central to the spatial organization is the dramatic two-story, oval-shaped wine tower, a signature architectural feature that serves both as a functional display and a captivating focal point. A circular staircase gracefully wraps around the tower, inviting guests to engage visually and physically with the space as they move between levels.

The interior layout supports diverse social settings from intimate tables and cozy booths to larger group seating and bar areas allowing the restaurant to cater to a wide range of moods and occasions. A dedicated stage is seamlessly integrated into the design, creating a vibrant hub for live music performances that energize the atmosphere and enhance the guest experience.

Outdoor dining options include a thoughtfully designed patio, providing a relaxed, open-air environment that complements the indoor spaces. Additionally, a partial second-floor balcony offers elevated seating with sweeping views of the main restaurant area below, fostering a unique perspective that encourages social interaction and engagement.

Throughout the design, materials, lighting, and finishes were carefully selected to reflect Funky Door’s artistic and lively personality. The balance of warmth, texture, and modernity creates a layered ambiance that supports both relaxation and excitement, inviting guests to linger, explore, and enjoy all that the venue has to offer.
